One of the best ways to make your own electricity is through solar energy. Start by investing in 2-3 solar panels and have them mounted in a sunny area, such as a rooftop. Consult a professional about installation for the panels, and create a thorough budget that will help you maintain the system.

You can build a wind generator for around 500 bucks, any DC permanant magnet motor with fan blades mounted on it will work for a generator. The rotor blades are made from 6″ pvc pipe, cut in half, straight on one cut, diagonal on the the other and voila, you have two blades. You will need to supplement that with solr PV panels, but you can go off grid with wood heat, this is the ultimate 3-way power plan, and it works.

Small-scale generation can be connected directly into your house wiring and then to a local distribution network (poles and wires that run through your neighbourhood). Typically, it can generate up to 10 kilowatts of electricity. This page contains more information about generating your own electricity including your rights and responsibilities.

Regardless of your reason, the goal is always the same; to produce and consume your own electricity. Now, living off the grid doesn’t require electricity. You can go off grid without it. Human beings have survived all across the world for tens of thousands of years without it.

Benjamin Franklin and Electricity. Electricity was on people's minds in the 1740s, but not in the way we think about it today. People used electricity for magic tricks by creating sparks and shocks. Scientists conducted experiments with electricity, but scientific thinking about electricity had not changed much in hundreds of years.
Most of U.S. and world electricity generation is from electric power plants that use a turbine to drive electricity generators. In a turbine generator, a moving fluid—water, steam, combustion gases, or air—pushes a series of blades mounted on a rotor shaft. The force of the fluid on the blades spins/rotates the rotor shaft of a generator.
A wind turbine turns wind power into electricity with the help of aerodynamic force from the rotor blades. The rotor blades work like the blades of a helicopter or an airplane wing. When air flows across the blade, the air pressure decreases on one side of the blade.
A solar thermal system generates electricity indirectly by capturing the heat of the sun to produce steam, which runs a turbine that produces electricity. A solar photovoltaic system produces electricity directly from the sun’s light through a series of physical and chemical reactions known as the photovoltaic effect.
Your electric heater wattage tells how much electricity is needed to power it. Most electric heaters use 1,500 watts, but some are slightly less or slightly more. Let’s go ahead and assume you’ve got a 1,500-watt heater. Since 1,000 watts equals 1 kilowatt, that means your heater uses 1.5 kilowatts of power.
Ionic compounds conduct electricity when dissolved in water because the movement of their negatively-charged and positively-charged particles forms an electrical current, explains About.com. In this liquid state, the charged ions separate and move freely, creating a current of electrical particles that conducts electricity.
One of the first major breakthroughs in electricity occurred in 1831, when British scientist Michael Faraday discovered the basic principles of electricity generation. Building on the experiments of Franklin and others, he observed that he could create or “induce” electric current by moving magnets inside coils of copper wire.

In the United States, electricity became common in homes in urban areas in the 1930s. Some people living in the country still did not have access to electricity at this time. When electricity became accessible to a large number of people in the 1930s, it allowed people to enjoy life's little luxuries, such as hot plates, waffle irons and electric stoves.
"A hydraulic turbine converts the energy of flowing water into mechanical energy. A hydroelectric generator converts this mechanical energy into electricity. The operation of a generator is based on the principles discovered by Faraday. He found that when a magnet is moved past a conductor, it causes electricity to flow.
The average U.S. household consumes about 11,000 kilowatthours (kWh) per year. 1 However, electricity use in homes varies across regions of the United States and across housing types. On average, apartments in the Northeast consume the least amount of electricity annually, while single-family detached homes in the South consume the most.

By using magnetism to create electricity, generators convert rotational power to electric current. Magnets mounted on the generator shaft produce rotating magnetic fields. Coils of wire arranged around the shaft are exposed to changing magnetic fields that induce electric currents in the wires.
If you need to remove static electricity from around your home, use a humidifier or boil water on the stove to increase humidity in the air, since dry air causes static electricity to be more active. If you have carpets, spray them with an anti-static treatment, or make your own by mixing a capful of fabric softener into a spray bottle of water and spraying it lightly over your carpet.

Most gas water heaters do not use electricity to operate. However, many of them rely on a minimal amount of electricity to get their pilot light burning in order to light their igniter. So although the gas heater doesn’t need electricity to run, it does need a minimal amount of electricity to start it.
Even a small amount of ions in a water solution makes it able to conduct electricity (so definitely don't add salt to your "lightning-storm" bathwater). When water contains these ions it will conduct electricity, such as from a lightning bolt or a wire from the wall socket, as the electricity from the source will seek out oppositely-charged ions in the water.

How Much Electricity Does My Fridge Use? By way of example, if you have a fridge with a top freezer from the 1980s with a capacity of 19.0-21.4 cubic feet, it's likely to use around 2,000 kWH per year. If you pay $.10 for electricity per kWh, that means the aging refrigerator is costing you about $.55 per day, $16.67 per month, and $200 per year.
For understanding how electricity is produced in a lemon we will go through the basic principle of transfer of electrons and electro-chemical reactions. The juice of lemon is acidic in nature and works as a powerful electrolyte. The lemon itself serves as a reservoir for transfer of electrons to and from the electrodes.
